Elegy of Open Hands

from The Water Aisle by Crappy Blue

about

"nothing to give. only ever asking for more, as if you were put here to provide. it wears on you."

this piece started as just the 8-bar chord progression it opens up with, and it stayed that way for several months until my university's percussion ensemble (which i was in) had to go on a *10-hour drive* to a percussion festival hosted by another university. with little to do but eat and sleep, i entertained myself on the ride by writing almost the entirety of this piece. the only part that happened after i got home from the trip was the ending section with the repeated material under an orchestral snare and bass drum.

i'm proud of Elegy for how it stands out against my other works. much like with Instated Flux, i went into it intending to avoid using percussion, but i hit a turning point when i decided to incorporate percussion with a more orchestral feel, creating a timbre that's very different from my usual drum set sounds.
